Edo Police Boss Urges for Calm Following Assault on UBTH Doctor

In a recent statement issued by the Commissioner of Police for the Edo State Police Command, CP Funsho Adegboye, a heartfelt plea was made for those in essential services, particularly doctors, to continue their invaluable work in saving lives amidst challenging circumstances.

The appeal comes in the wake of a distressing incident where Dr. Osaretin Asemota of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) was attacked by Mr. Owegie Christopher, who had tragically lost his wife under the doctor’s care.

According to CP Funsho Adegboye , Mr. Owegie Christopher had brought his wife, who was in a coma, to UBTH for medical attention on April 6th, 2024.

Despite efforts by Dr. Asemota to stabilize her condition, the patient unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment. This tragic turn of events led Mr. Christopher to lash out at the doctor, accusing him of deceit and vowing revenge.

Fortunately, Dr. Asemota was rescued from the assault by his colleagues and hospital security personnel. Following the incident, he promptly reported the assault to the Ugbowo Police Divisional Headquarters in Benin City, where both parties provided statements. Mr. Christopher was temporarily held for counseling before being released unconditionally.

CP Adegboye emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and abiding by the law, particularly in times of distress.
