In a significant development, law enforcement authorities revealed that they have apprehended more than 100 individuals in connection with a same-sex wedding ceremony(Gay marriage).
The event, which took place within Delta State, has prompted attention due to the country’s stance on homosexuality.
Through a tweet issued on Tuesday, the police announced their action and stated that the detained individuals will soon be presented to the public.
The incident has reignited discussions surrounding Nigeria’s anti-gay legislation, implemented back in January 2014 under President Goodluck Jonathan. This legislation imposes a 14-year prison sentence for those found guilty of engaging in same-sex relationships.
The anti-gay law had previously come into the spotlight when, in December 2019, law enforcement apprehended 47 men during a raid at a Lagos hotel. The suspects were accused of openly expressing affection towards individuals of the same sex.
Although they initially pleaded not guilty, they were granted bail and the court eventually dismissed the case due to perceived negligence in the police’s prosecution.
