The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has issued a stern warning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a violent assault on journalists covering the party’s gubernatorial primaries.

The incident, which occurred on February 16, 2024, at the Lushville Hotel in Benin, saw journalists beaten and their equipment destroyed.

NUJ Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, expressed outrage over the attack, emphasizing the legitimate right of journalists to cover electoral processes. Alenkhe read out directives from the national leadership of the union during a press conference in Benin, outlining the actions expected from the APC.

These actions include replacing damaged equipment, covering medical bills for injured journalists, and issuing apologies at both the state and national levels.

Additionally, the NUJ demands accountability from the Edo State Commissioner of Police in prosecuting those responsible for the attack.

Journalists who were present at the scene recounted harrowing experiences, with some alleging that security personnel stood by without intervening as the assault unfolded. Abraham Godwin, a journalist with Arise Television, described how his laptop was smashed amidst the chaos.

The NUJ stressed the importance of ensuring journalists’ safety during the upcoming Edo State election in September 2024, urging all parties to prioritize adequate security measures at event locations.
