Justice Mary Itsueli of the Edo State High Court, sitting in Benin City, found Yahoo fraudsters Kelvin Ifeanyi Aneke and Leonard Emmanuel Osaretin guilty of fraud and sentenced them to prison.
The Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, charged them each with a single count of unauthorized possession of false documents.
Based on information learned about their evil deeds, they were apprehended.
Investigations revealed that Aneke, 23, had impersonated Calvin Hills, an American citizen, to con unwary victims. Osaretin, 25, made a phony female Instagram account with the name Anaroberts2221 to swindle gullible victims.
He is interested in romantic frauds. Kelvin Ifeanyi Aneke is accused of violating Sections 6 and 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud popularly known as Yahoo and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, which is punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act, sometime in May 2023 in Benin City, Edo State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court.
The defendants admitted guilt to their individual accusations at their arraignment, which prompted the prosecution’s attorney, K.Y. Bello, to request that the defendants be found guilty and sentenced appropriately.
However, as the accused were first-time offenders, the defendants’ attorney urged the court to balance justice with mercy.
The two were found guilty and given a three-year term by the presiding Judge, with the possibility of an additional $200,000 in fines.
Additionally, as proceeds of crime, they must turn up their phones and any remaining funds in their bank accounts to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
